Today is the day!
The Houston Public Library Foundation has officially entered into its summer appeal, and I want to personally invite you to join me in making a gift to the Houston Public Library.
Last week, I wrote to you about Jack and Charlotte, a brother and sister who quite literally run into their local Houston Public Library branch each week when they visit. Their joy and enthusiasm cannot be contained (and I wouldn’t want to try!).
But this uncontained excitement is not unique to Jack and Charlotte. Across the library system, hundreds-of-thousands of children come to the Houston Public Library each year for storytime, STEM programs, arts and crafts, camps, and to grow their imaginations.
These programs are ONLY MADE POSSIBLE through YOUR support! Library programs and events are nearly totally dependent on private contributions.
This excitement is not contained to children. Teenagers, adults and seniors all come to the library because there is always something for everyone. Last year alone, 2.3 million Houstonians visited the Houston Public Library because they know that the library is here for them!
Now more than ever, the public library needs our support. With budget cuts and the loss of federal grants, every dollar counts. The library team is one of the most creative and committed groups I have ever seen when it comes to stretching a dollar, and so the more support we are able to give them the better served our community will be!
At the end of the day, the only thing more important than the stories bound in ink and paper on the shelves of the library are the stories being made between people connecting, growing, and building their lives through HPL.
