Dear friends,
As we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, I can’t help but to recall the words of Henry David Thoreau: “I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual.”
Every day, I am grateful for my family, friends, and all of those who have enriched my life in so many ways for which I will perpetually remain unable to account. It is all a gift.
Today, there are two things for which I am particularly grateful: the extraordinary work of the Houston Public Library, and each of you who recognize and support that good and mighty work.
Every day, the team of the Houston Public Library puts their shoulder to the commonweal and serve the people of this city, helping Houstonians to learn, to grow, to explore, and to prosper.
They help our young to read and support lifelong learning. They preserve our history while providing the latest technology. They foster community, civic knowledge, entrepreneurship, and a richer engagement overall with the life of the mind and of the heart. They are a treasure that provide a treasured service.
And every day, alongside the staff of HPL, our supporters step up and recognize the value the Library brings. All 12,000 annual events and programs, additional Collections and technological resources, and supplemental staff support are only available because of your investment in the Houston Public Library.
Indeed, my own thanksgiving, for life, for the Houston Public Library, for YOU, is perpetual. As so many gather, I will remember each of you and hold you in gratitude for all that you make possible for a flourishing Houston. Happy Thanksgiving! I remain,
With best regards,
Nick Sawicki
