Dear friends:
It’s hard to believe that June 8 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the one and only Barbara Bush!
Following the passing of Mrs. Bush in 2018, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation set an ambitious goal: to make sure that every public library in Houston is a designated “Family Place Library.”
A vital part of Mrs. Bush’s work was encouraging families to read together, knowing that children who learn to read from and with their families have stronger literacy skills throughout their lifetime.
Now, as part of the celebrations around Mrs. Bush’s 100th birthday, and through visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to this project, the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation is supporting the final 5 Family Place Libraries in the Houston Public Library system this year.
Please click here to watch a video to learn about the extraordinary impact that Family Place Libraries have in supporting families as they work to encourage literacy in the home as a way to support young readers.
Additionally, nearly all Houston Public Library locations will be celebrating this milestone this Saturday, June 7 with special story times beginning at 11 am. All are welcome to attend!
Happy Birthday, Barbara Bush, and thank you to the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation for carrying on her legacy as a valued partner of Houston Public Library and the Houston Public Library Foundation!
With best regards,
Nick Sawicki
